I've been doing so many pieces for the children's market lately that I thought I'd change it up and do something darker.

This is an editorial illustration about female gang members. It's my 3rd, and probably final, attempt at painting this idea - you may remember this one from a few years ago. It's based on an article I read a long time ago about female gangs. The image is about the loss of individual identity that occurs in favor of gang identity and how the individual's decision to become a member often, ultimately, leads to their death.

upcoming trip

My husband is going to have several days off in a row in a couple of weeks so we wanted to take advantage of that to visit another country. We found ridiculously cheap flights to Gdansk, Poland, so that's where we'll be going. I'm so excited. This type of getaway, where we get to experience other parts of the world, is exactly why we moved to the UK in the first place. I can't wait :)

illustration friday - frozen

I had started an illustration about a hot air balloon when the IF theme was 'Flying,' but I didn't get it finished in time, and now it's on the back burner. This illo is from last winter, but it fits this week's theme, 'Frozen,' so perfectly that I decided it was worth re-posting.

Yesterday Dario and I had the most wonderful day together. At one point we went for coffee and I did some drawings of buildings in my sketchbook.

3x3

Photobucket
©2009 Jacqueline Hudon-Verrelli

Gustavo Aimar, an illustrator who's work I adore (so unique and full of character) is celebrating his blog's birthday with another blog where he's posting images made by other artists that measure 3 x 3. Since I enjoy his work and his blog so much, I really wanted to contribute. I spent several hours last evening working on my piece. However, when I went back to the site to get the e-mail address I was to send a jpg of my image to, I saw that it was supposed to be 3 x 3 cm. I made mine 3 x 3 INCHES. It was important to him that the work be made at that small size and not just be scaled down, so my piece isn't eligible. I was very disappointed that I hadn't paid closer attention to the guidelines before starting. Lesson learned.
