giraffe - sketches

These sketches are from a painting that I just did for the 'It's a Jungle Out There' show. It's the first illustration that I've worked on since I had my baby last July and it was so great to get back to that.

The idea behind this show is that the animals have escaped from the zoo and are loose in the city. Each participating artist got an animal and it was up to the artist the decide what the animal did in the city.

I got the giraffe and I spent quite a lot of time thinking about my concept because i really wanted to take advantage of the giraffe's long neck. I also wanted to come up with an interesting way to fit it into the horizontal format of the project.

I don't often draw animals so it took me a few tries before I ended up with something that I was happy with. My initial sketches were too realistic for my tastes, but I needed to get those out of my system in order to arrive at something more simple and playful.

assorted owls

I drew these at my sketch group last week. I was researching owls before I did the sketches and was really impressed by the huge variety of different owls out there. Some are really creepy - google the great gray owl to see what I'm talking about.

Sketches for children's poetry

A while back I was commissioned to make a couple of illustrations based on some children's poetry by Valerie Bean. These are the final sketches for those illustrations. The first poem is about a little boy who likes to squeeze noses and say "frump!" The second poem is about a little girl who blows a really big bubble and it lifts her up into the sky.

Sketches/process for Aron James album

I started working on an album design for Aaron James in October of 2007. Aaron wasn't sure about what he wanted so I did a ton of sketches in the beginning trying to come up with something he'd like. It took a while, and we even changed directions at one point, but he eventually decided that he wanted a suitcase on the front of his album.

Here are some of the variations on that theme which I sent him:

Although he didn't end up choosing this version, I still liked it and painted it for the Calgary Crime Stoppers Gala silent auction (the final was posted on March 14/08).

He ended up preferring a more straight foreward suitcase. This is the sketch we went with:

I'll post the finals tomorrow.
